The Brics Сountry Abruptly Bought Russian Copper

From January to June 2025, Russia sold 564,000 tons of copper to China

Tuesday, September 9, 2025

From January to June 2025, Russia sold 564,000 tons of copper to China. This was reported by the Kommersant newspaper.

Compared to the same period last year, shipments increased by 81 percent. The value of exports increased 2.5 times, to $3.3 billion. China mainly bought copper ore from Russia, which accounted for 339,000 tons, and cathode copper (190,500 tons).

It is noted that the reason for this increase was the abolition of Russian export duties, as well as the introduction of 50 percent duties on this non-ferrous metal in the United States. In addition, the slowdown in domestic demand and the revival of the Chinese economy had an impact.

In early July, US President Donald Trump promised that starting on August 1, his country would impose a 50% duty on copper. The reason for the decision was the issues of strengthening the national security of the United States.

Prior to that, it was reported that due to the escalation of the tariff confrontation between Washington and Beijing, China halved imports of American copper.
